How far would you go to reach enlightenment—or just a state of relaxation? In Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers (which airs on Wednesdays), nine people venture into an experimental wellness retreat and test themselves, all in the name of self-improvement.

Like HBO’s Big Little LiesNine Perfect Strangers is based on a book by the Australian author Liane Moriarty. Speaking to NPR, Moriarty revealed that her target, when writing the book, was wellness culture, especially elaborate and expensive rituals like the kind offered in the show. “I believe in mindfulness and I believe in hot stone massages,”she told NPR. “But at the same time, people are spending huge amounts of money on ridiculous drinks and products that clearly have no benefit whatsoever,” all for something as elusive as “transformation.” Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty

The novel’s 451 pages are narrated by the nine guests at Tranquillum House, as well as its employees—including the spa’s mastermind, Masha Dimitriov. An all-star cast, featuring Nicole Kidman as Masha and Melissa McCarthy as jaded novelist Frances Welty, bring Moriarty’s well-drawn characters to the screen, with a slightly more American twist (though the series was filmed in a spa on the Australian coast.) For example, Tony Hogburn (played by Bobby Cannavale) is an Australian football player in the book, and an American football has-been in the show.

But the differences between the book and series go beyond Australian and American cultural quirks. For example, whereas the show is set in a sleek wellness center, the book takes place in a historic mansion. That alone gives the two works a much different vibe.

Is Nine Perfect Strangers Scary?

Is Nine Perfect Strangers Scary

You went into Nine Perfect Strangers expecting Big Little Lies Season 3. But now you’ve seen that twisted trailer and you’re worried that Nicole Kidman is about to straight up murder her guests. So is this Hulu miniseries secretly terrifying? It’s a fair question to ask.

As someone who has read Liane Moriarty’s novel of the same name and seen the first six episodes of the series, I can confidently say that Nine Perfect Strangers is not a horror series. There aren’t going to be any secret killings, sexual assaults, demonic rituals, or cult sacrifices.

If that’s your definition of horror, rest assured that this series will not give you actual nightmares. But this thriller will likely force you to reevaluate the wellness industry as a whole.

The terror of David E. Kelley and John Henry Butterworth’s miniseries comes from subtleties. No one actually gets hurt, but these people are forced to relinquish any sense of control over their lives, abandoning their cell phones and normal diets to follow the sacred law of Masha (Kidman).

The ominous warnings of the horror genre are replaced with creepy, tight-lipped smiles from staff and endless gaslighting. It takes several episodes before guests of this 10-day retreat realize what’s actually happening. So, yes, Nine Perfect Strangers will make you uncomfortable. But it’s not designed to keep you up at night like The Haunting of Hill House or American Horror Story.

Is Nine Perfect Strangers on Netflix?

Unfortunately, Netflix isn’t the place you want to go to view new episodes of the 2021 series. While Netflix does have a good amount of cult-like titles available to watch, this show is not currently one of them.

“Welcome to Tranquillum House,” Nicole Kidman’s character Masha says to a group of guests on a wellness retreat, setting the stage for what’s to come in Hulu’s mysterious new series, Nine Perfect Strangers.

The new drama, which is based on Liane Moriarty’s bestselling book, is streaming now on Hulu, and follows the “strangers” as their personal lives quickly become intertwined and entangled into a game of secrets and deception.

The miniseries’ first season launches with eight episodes. Here’s your guide on how to stream Nine Perfect Strangers (also starring Melissa McCarthy, Michael Shannon and a host of other Hollywood stars) online.

The big spoiler: Masha is drugging the spa’s guests as a way to get them to open up.

From the start of their 10-day stay at Tranquillum House, the nine guests realize this is not going to be a vacation. First, Yao and Delilah, the spa’s resident “wellness consultants,” take things out of their bags. Confiscated contraband includes chocolate, alcohol, cell phones, and anything else that falls in the category of “indulgences.”

Not long after arriving, Masha announces the guests must remain silent for five days. Luckily, the show eliminates this plot line—five episodes of silence might not make for the most compelling TV. After adjusting to perpetual quiet, the guests go along with Masha’s other insistent ideas, like drinking regular smoothies.

On the fifth day, Heather Marconi notices her family is behaving strangely. In short, they’re far more forthcoming with their emotions than usual. She correctly guesses that Masha is spiking their smoothies with drugs. Indeed, Masha is micro-dosing them with LSD, claiming the drug is a “shortcut” to healing.

At the end, Masha’s experiment gets out of hand.

Think of Masha as a mad scientist. She prioritizes the result more than the process—even if the process involves people’s sanity. Her “ends justify the means” attitude culminates at the end of the book, when she pushes her experiment to the limit.

After drugging the retreat’s guests with LSD and ecstasy, she locks them in main room without food or water. Moriarty describes their hallucinations and behavior in great detail—which means in the show, we may be treated to watching Melissa McCarthy have a drawn-out conversation with miniature people.

The trouble escalates when the guests come down from their highs, and learn they’re trapped in a nightmare escape room. No matter what lengths the guests go to, they’re unable to find the code to open the lock.

Meanwhile, Masha, Yao and Delilah are watching the guest’s progress from Tranquillum House’s built-in CCTV. Yao and Delilah lose faith in their leader, questioning Masha’s grip on reality. It doesn’t help that she, too, is high on LSD. Delilah steals Ben’s Lamborghini and runs away; Yao leaves Masha and abandons the guests to their fate.

As the guests brainstorm (and languish), they hear fire from upstairs. Could it be Masha’s cigarettes, her one indulgence? They imagine the fire coming for them. Then, they realize it’s not a fire, but the sound of a fire playing on a loop.

Rescue arrives when the police catch Delilah in Ben’s car, and return to Tranquillum House. Turns out the door was always open, if only they’d tried the knob. Yao and Masha are arrested and the guests leave the resort in desperate need of vacation.

here are several reasons to commit hours of your life to a TV series: to be provoked, to laugh, to explore universal elements of the human condition, to become totally absorbed, to be turned on by voyeurism, fashion/wealth porn or hotness, to have fun (whether intentionally or not). Nine Perfect Strangers, the Hulu limited series which premiered on 18 August, would appear to offer at least some of these draws.

The eight-part show comes with cable TV pedigree – created by David E Kelley (of HBO’s Big Little Lies and The Undoing), based on the 2018 book by Liane Moriarty (author of Big Little Lies’ source material), with a stacked cast including Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, Michael Shannon, Regina Hall and Bobby Cannavale, among others. It’s got cult-ish vibes, a mysteriously inscrutable central figure in Kidman’s Russian-accented Masha, a lush locale (a spa retreat in California, though filmed in Byron Bay, Australia), a hot topic rich for skewering (wellness culture) and the perennial TV draw of miserable wealthy, mostly white people (as seen in the aforementioned Big Little Lies, The Undoing, Succession and The White Lotus).

But for all the promising elements the show amasses, Nine Perfect Strangers is curiously, thoroughly dull. It’s a case study of so-called Prestige TV parts – unencumbered length, overwrought performances, atmospheric tracking shots and ominous score masquerading as depth – amounting to a misfire, intriguing blocks with no alchemical glue. Though arguably not the worst show of the year, Nine Perfect Strangers is, especially given the cast, the most disappointing, with a clear, yawning gap between what the creators think they’re making and the show that actually exists.

The show suffers from some confounding logistical questions out of the gate: how are none of the guests at Tranquillum, the dubious wellness resort run by Masha, aware of the no-cellphone policy ahead of their 10-day retreat? How did the guests discover and subscribe to a place that does not advertise nor, apparently, have any word-of-mouth recognition? Over the course of the six episodes available to critics, each of the characters poses and ponders why they’re sequestered at Tranquillum – “why am I here?” washed up ex-jock Tony (Cannavale) cries in the fourth episode – which unfortunately prompts the same question from the viewer. Why are we here, hours into this shallow pool?

“Prestige” is usually associated with profound, if not high-budget, but Nine Perfect Strangers is not the first nor does it look the second. Director Jonathan Levine, who steered all eight episodes (six of which were available for critics) attempts to establish a shorthand for the ominousness of Tranquillum, the dubious wellness resort at which nine guests arrive, through closeup shots of characters in rapture (screaming, meditating) and slow-motion shots of smoothies whirring in a blender. The effect only highlights the show’s slim characterization, and stands in unfavorable contrast to the intoxicating, unsettling mood of Big Little Lies (directed by Jean-Marc Vallée) and the chilliness of The Undoing (directed by Susanne Bier).

Given Masha’s vague proclamations (“we’re going to make you well”) and winks at greater trends (wellness retreats are “just another construct to separate rich people from their money and get them to feel good about themselves in the process”, chirps Luke Evans’s Lars), Nine Perfect Strangers gestures at a larger critique of wellness culture’s emptiness and cycle of self-improvement. But any satire is blunted by the show’s sincere seriousness and Masha’s inscrutability. It’s a central vacuum compounded by other problems, namely that the characters’ motivations are stated baldly and barely proceed beyond thinly sketched archetypes.

A show does not need to be effective critique to be “good”, ie. watchable. But Nine Perfect Strangers fails to deliver on less cerebral reasons for tuning in: Kidman’s wig looks like a Lord of the Rings costume hand-me-down (McCarthy at least sports good lipstick game), brief sex scenes are devoid of heat (and, in the case of Masha and acolytes Yao and Delilah, merely confusing). Chemistry between the characters (sexual or otherwise) is barely a flicker five episodes in.

Nine Perfect Strangers was certainly not helped by premiering just days after HBO aired the finale of The White Lotus, the summer’s word-of-mouth TV hit that’s also a stacked ensemble of strangers gathering at a lush hotel, and a much more scathing, focused and riveting satire of wealth privilege. Nor does it benefit from Hulu’s commercial breaks, which led me to pick up my phone during a show that never really convinces you to put it back down.

But neither overshadow the show’s main sin: its presumption of audience interest based on flashy parts – that if you just stick enough famous, intriguing actors in a beautiful location, talk around a vague hot-button theme, suggest danger, sketch motivation and fill the rest with airy shots of verdant food and flora, it should be enough to keep people watching.

Nine Perfect Strangers ultimately resembles the shots of Masha’s microdosed smoothies it so favors – pretty, discordant elements mashed together with just a drop of transcendence.
