If you’ve met the Duchess Anna Henrietta in the quest ‘The Beast of Toussaint’ you’ll learn about the five virtues in conversation. These five virtues are; compassion, generosity, honor, valor, and wisdom. Even if you’ve missed your chance and completed some of the quest examples listed below, there are plenty of ways to embody the virtues — try playing through the main story and returning to the lake. Geralt needs to take those extra steps to prove himself, because the Aerondight is one of the best swords available in The Witcher 3.

The powerful Aerondight sword appeared in Witcher 1 and Witcher 2, and finally returns in Witcher 3: Blood and Wine. In Witcher 1, the sword was also given by the Lady of the Lake, although Witcher 3 requires slightly more from Geralt.

Aerondight is acquired during the quest “There Can Only Be One” — accept the quest at the Notice Boards of Toussaint.Alternatively, travel to the lake west of Corvo Bianco and talk to the Hermit in the center of the water.To complete this side quest, you must complete five tasks so that Geralt embodies the five virtues.Compassion: During the quest ‘The Beast of Toussaint’, choose to spare the Shaelmaar beast.Generosity: After completing ‘The Beast of Toussaint’ and post-‘Blood Run’ explore the city of Beauclair. At least in my game anyway. I will tell you in my first playthrough, I did not bother building Caerme or Zerrikanterment because I had swords that were almost as good.

As far as I can tell, the Vran Armor is unmatched in the game. Unfortunately, you don”t get any of this stuff until way too late in the game. imho I would be interested to see what people say by chapter.

Actually in The Witcher 1 I find the Moonblade to be better than Aerondight, but that”s just because I prefer raw damage over critical effects. Haven”t finished The Witcher 2 yet..

My 2-cents 1. Armor: Ysgith (yes I know it has negligibly less armor than Vran but its additional properties more than make up for it – come on, +2 vitality regen outside combat?). 2. Silver sword: I forgot the name, but it is neither Zerri nor Addan. It has comparable damage (very close) +25% against large creatures and +25% against gargoyles. And I have to comment that near the end, only a select few enemies from those categories can 2- or 3-hit me (that being said, I did not use/upgrade Quen – some of you will know which enemies I am talking about). 3. Steel sword: No idea about Forgotten Vran sword but Caerme was the best I have.

I think you receive the silver sword that does damage against Gargoyles as a quest reward from The Gargoyle Contract. It”s a weak-ish sword. Basically, with the Addan Deith and a properly built character, you can kill Phillipa”s Elemental in 3 hits, on Hard (I know I did). Forgotten Vran sword is about 5 points worth of damage weaker than Caerme – but you get it later than Caerme, and only on Roche”s side (and even then there”s another condition). I think it”s meant more as a last-resort weapon that the game grants you, a contingency plan in case you have a weaker sword.

..Mild spoiler.. I got that sword before entering Loc Muinne (I think I spelt it wrong). I was on Roche”s path (not sure if it matters). I remember comparing that silver sword to Zerikannment or Addan Deith and decided that I liked mine better. Actually after checking the item database, the sword”s name is Deithwenn. It is 3 damage behind Addan Deith at most. With the bonus damage against large creatures it is more powerful against the elemental (well, if you got him on 3 hits I guess it doesn”t matter). Edit: Wait a second. I got a bit confused there. I mistook a mini-boss in Act 2 to be in Act 3.

This. Although on my mage heavy build I liked the Operator”s staff better than the forgotten Vran sword. Operators staff has 40-60 damage I, believe and a mighty 80% incineration plus 10% freeze (if memory serves me right). In the end I had 8 vigor points, 0.5 vigor regen in and out of combat and 80-97 damage with potions. The best thing was, if you only use Greater Critical Effects mutagens and boost sign damage and intensity as far as possible you get exploding frozen bodies left and right and you can 1-2 shot a group of harpies from your quen damage plus a single igni area spell alone. Actually from the Operator”s staff they dance around drunken from being set on fire, then the next or the one after the next hit freezes them and makes them explode :). My mage build is so much fun, I load it up from time to time just to replay the last battles in act 3. (on normal difficulty). Hoping for some decent dlc or expansion pack so I can use it to full effect again 🙂 The sword with 25% added bonus against large creatures and gargoyles is called “Deithwen” and is very useful against a certain large creature at the end.

The Operator”s staff is good for a heavy critical-effects based build, but the downside is that it is handled slower, and is incompatible with the witcher sword style.
